VMware costs more, and support is running out

The licensing changes since Broadcom's takeover already weigh on the budgets of many organisations running VMware, and some hypervisors reach end of life or fall out of support before anyone planned for it. Staying put is not neutral: it means paying more for a platform with no long-term future.

  • Audit of the existing virtualisation infrastructure.

  • Planning and execution of the migration (VMware to Proxmox, Hyper-V and others); Citrix, Parallels or VDI environments require a specific analysis of the existing architecture.

  • Validation tests and post-migration optimisation.

  • A skills transfer session on the new platform.

Who is it for?

  • Organisations on VMware affected by the post-Broadcom licensing changes.

  • Organisations with hypervisors at end of life or out of support.

  • SMEs that want to move to an open-source platform (Proxmox) to reduce costs.

Pricing by number of VMs

The price depends on the number of virtual machines to migrate. The starting price shown above covers 1 to 5 VMs. Batches of 6 to 15 and 16 to 30 VMs are priced in higher tiers, and beyond 30 VMs the price is on request.

Every tier includes a two-hour skills transfer session; additional sessions can be added. Critical cutovers are usually scheduled outside business hours (evening, weekend) to limit the impact on your activity: that window carries a 50% uplift on the daily rate, while preparation and testing are billed at business-hour rates. For organisations outside France, windows are agreed in your local time.

How it works

  1. Audit: inventory of VMs, dependencies and current performance.

  2. Architecture: target design and migration plan.

  3. Migration: VMs converted in batches, with validation at each step.

  4. Tests: functional and performance validation, and high availability testing if your target architecture already provides it within the scope.

  5. Training: skills transfer on the new platform.

The migration is carried out remotely, through the administration access you provide to the source and target platforms. An on-site visit is possible on quote if hardware needs to be installed.

Deliverables

  • VMs migrated and validated on the new platform within the planned scope.

  • Updated architecture documentation.

  • Validation tests carried out and documented.

  • Administrator training on the new platform.

  • 14 days of post-cutover support for questions and minor adjustments related to the migrated VMs and the delivered documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Can we move from VMware to Proxmox with a planned cutover window? The migration is done in batches. Each batch is switched over during a planned maintenance window, typically in the evening or at the weekend; these windows carry a 50% uplift on the daily rate. Like any critical infrastructure migration, this is an obligation of means: there is no guarantee of zero downtime.

Why does the price depend on the number of VMs? Each VM has to be audited, converted, tested and validated individually: the work grows directly with the number of machines, even if the marginal cost per VM falls on large volumes thanks to reusable scripts and procedures.

Will performance be the same? Performance depends on the target architecture, storage, network, allocated resources and application workloads, so equivalent performance cannot be guaranteed. A benchmark is run after migration to compare behaviour before and after within the planned scope.

What about our remaining VMware licences? We can help you prepare the technical elements needed to plan your exit, in coordination with your contracts and vendor contacts. Buying licences and negotiating with the vendor remain out of scope.

What does the 14-day support after cutover include? Questions and minor adjustments related to the migrated VMs and the delivered documentation. It does not cover fixing business applications outside the agreed scope, licence purchases, vendor negotiation, an unplanned complete redesign, monitoring or ongoing administration, day-to-day operations, on-call duty, a complex Citrix or VDI migration without a separate study, or undocumented dependencies.
