Who we are and how we work with US businesses
SolidKern is an independent IT service provider established in Villiers-le-Bel, in the Val-d’Oise, just north of Paris. We have no office, branch or representative in the United States, and we say so up front: every project is run from France.
Almost all of our work, from an Active Directory audit to a Windows 11 migration or a Microsoft 365 and Intune rollout, is carried out over secure remote access, with video calls for workshops, reviews and handover. When part of a project genuinely needs someone in the room, the visit is quoted separately, exactly as it is for customers in France. For a US customer that means a transatlantic trip, so we only suggest it when the project really calls for it.
Outside France, we work with businesses only. Our customers are small and medium-sized organizations, often without an in-house IT department, and IT teams that need a reliable extra pair of hands on a sensitive project. US businesses with a European subsidiary, or with customers and staff in Europe, often find it useful to work with a provider who knows the European rules from the inside.
Working across time zones
Paris is six hours ahead of New York and nine hours ahead of Los Angeles for most of the year; the gap shrinks by an hour for a few weeks in March and from late October to early November, because the US and Europe change their clocks on different dates. We adapt to your schedule: calls and workshops are set at times that suit your team, on the East Coast as on the West Coast, agreed in advance.
Planned cut-overs and migrations are scheduled with you in advance, for instance in a maintenance window when your users are offline.
You can book a free 30-minute discovery call online, or a paid one-hour in-depth study session if your project needs a detailed look before a quote. Both are available from our contact page.
Language, quotes and invoicing
We work with you in English: calls, quotes, reports and documentation. Each project starts with a written quote setting out the scope, deliverables, milestones, estimated lead times and prerequisites.
Prices are in euros and invoices are issued in euros; we do not quote in dollars, so the amount on the invoice is the amount on the quote. VAT is not applicable (article 293 B of the French General Tax Code). As your business is outside the EU, the tax arrangements that apply to your invoice are set out in the quote. Unless agreed otherwise, 30% is due on order and the balance at the milestones in the quote, by bank transfer. Our terms of service and pricing give the details.
What we do, and what we do not do
US businesses have access to our whole catalog: audits, Windows and server migrations, virtualization, virtual desktops, Citrix and Parallels RAS, Microsoft 365 and Intune, awareness training, GDPR documentation and IT project management. Each service is a project with a defined scope, a start and an end.
What we do not offer, in the US or anywhere else, is an ongoing commitment: day-to-day administration or monitoring of your IT environment, on-call coverage, or a guaranteed recovery time. Those services call for a local managed service provider who can be on site quickly, and we are happy to work alongside yours. We make no promise of a particular result or of guaranteed compliance: we give you findings you can check, a prioritized plan and the work to carry it out.
The US framework behind these projects
We are not lawyers and give no legal advice on US law; our role is to put the technical side in place and to document it. Three sets of rules come up most often in the projects we can take on.
State consumer privacy laws
There is no single federal privacy law for businesses in the United States. A growing number of states have adopted their own comprehensive consumer privacy laws, starting with California, whose Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) was expanded by the California Privacy Rights Act. Whether a law applies depends on thresholds set by each state; if you process data about people in Europe, the GDPR may also apply to you.
NIST Cybersecurity Framework
The NIST Cybersecurity Framework, in version 2.0 since February 2024, is a widely used reference in the US for organizing cybersecurity risk management. Our audits and action plans can be mapped to it when you need to report against it.
Accessibility and the ADA
For web accessibility, the Department of Justice adopted a rule in 2024 under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act requiring state and local governments to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. This mainly concerns public entities and their websites rather than the internal IT projects we carry out.
Where we are most useful for US businesses
Active Directory audit: a read-only review of your directory with a prioritized action plan.
IT audit: devices, backups, Microsoft 365, accounts and licenses, with a roadmap.
Microsoft 365 and Intune: tenant set-up, device compliance and conditional access, with optional periodic follow-up.
Windows 11 migration: Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025.
VMware, Proxmox and Hyper-V migration: moving platforms without improvising in production.
Citrix audit and optimization and Parallels RAS: published applications and remote desktops.
The Windows Modernization package combines the Windows 11 migration with Microsoft 365 and Intune. The full list is on our services page.
Frequently asked questions
Is the time difference a problem?
No. We adapt to your schedule: calls are set at times that suit your team, on the East Coast as on the West Coast. Cut-overs and migrations are planned in advance, for instance in a maintenance window when your users are offline.
Can you work on our systems without coming to the US?
Yes, for almost everything we do. Audits, migrations, Microsoft 365 and Intune projects and awareness sessions are carried out over secure remote access and video calls. Only the physical side (server rooms, cabling, hardware) needs someone on site, and we state it in the scope.
Do you travel to the United States?
When a project really needs it, yes. The trip and its costs are quoted separately, as they are for customers in France. Most projects need no travel at all.
How do we pay?
By bank transfer in euros, with VAT not applicable under article 293 B of the French General Tax Code. The tax arrangements that apply to a business outside the EU are set out in the quote. Unless agreed otherwise, 30% is due on order and the balance at the milestones in the quote.
Can you manage our IT day to day?
No. We do not provide ongoing administration, monitoring, on-call coverage or guaranteed recovery times. We carry out defined projects and can work alongside your managed service provider.
